Understanding Personal Income Tax (APIT) in SL
Sri Lanka's Advance Personal Income Tax (APIT) system is progressive, meaning the more you earn, the higher the percentage of tax you pay on each additional rupee. Navigating the Inland Revenue Department's (IRD) tax tables can be daunting, but our 2024/2025 calculator makes it as simple as entering your monthly salary.
The "Tax-Free" Threshold & Bands
As per the latest gazette, the current tax hierarchy works as follows:
- First Rs. 100,000 / month: Tax Free (0%)
- Next Rs. 41,667 / month: 6%
- Next Rs. 41,667 / month: 12%
- Next Rs. 41,667 / month: 18%
- Max marginal rate: 36%
Why Your Take-Home Salary Varies
Remember that your Net Pay is your Gross Salary minus both APIT Tax and your 8% EPF contribution. Most people forget to account for the EPF deduction, leading to a gap between the expected salary and what arrives in the bank account.
